Summer Rising
Summer Rising is New York City’s free summer plan for any child in grades K-12 who wants to participate.
Program Overview
- Summer Rising will be available throughout the City to every New York City student, including students with disabilities.
- All programs will be run by local school leaders and trusted community-based organizations.
- Summer Rising programs are full day and in-person experiences.
- All programs will create a bridge back to school in the fall and give parents peace of mind as they return to work.
- The environment will be safe and supportive. Staff members are prepared to respond to children’s social and emotional needs.
- Summer programs will offer academic support, arts, recreation, and social-emotional support.
- Breakfast, lunch, and a snack will be served to each student.

2021 – 2022 School year Calendar
This is the 2021–22 school year calendar for all K–12 NYCDOE public schools. If your child attends a private, parochial, or charter school, please contact your child’s school for information about their calendar. Please note the following reminders:
- November 2, Election Day, will be a fully remote, asynchronous instructional day for all students.
- On “Snow days” or days when school buildings are closed due to an emergency, all students and families should plan on participating in remote learning.
- Parent-teacher conference dates are the citywide defaults; individual school dates might differ from those below. Your child’s teacher will work with you to schedule your conference.

Chancellor Porter’s Family Forums
Join a conversation with the Chancellor!
Chancellor Porter wants to hear your questions and feedback. In light of unprecedented investments from local, state and federal government, these forums will serve as an opportunity for the Department of Education (DOE) to hear directly from school communities on the types of resources and support they need as we move towards a full reopening in September.

Family and Community Empowerment (FACE)
The Family and Community Empowerment (FACE) team is responsible for developing and supporting parent governance structures in New York City schools. FACE provides leadership opportunities, training, coaching, and other resources for families to help them advocate for the educational success of their children. In addition, FACE provides support to parent coordinators, family leadership coordinators, and school leadership so all New York City parents are empowered and welcomed in their school communities.

Brooklyn Basics
The Brooklyn Basics are five evidence-based parenting and caregiving principles that encompass much of what experts find is important for children from birth to age three. Every child from every background can benefit from routinely experiencing Brooklyn Basics learning experiences. The Brooklyn Basics Initiative will work to ensure that every parent and caregiver is fully prepared to use the “The Basics” in everyday life.
